Didn’t think I’d make another short film, but when @netflixfilm and @filmindependent presented the opportunity, I couldn’t pass it up. I wrote and directed “Black Prom” during the pandemic with an amazing circle of artists, and it premieres today on Netflix’s Film Club Channel on YouTube and on @strongblacklead. It’s about youthful innocence and joy being suddenly disrupted by the brutality of our times, and what the world looks like when we care about people. It’s partly inspired by a prose poem I wrote, my fascination with prom as a black cultural celebration, and instances of brutality against human beings. We are so much more than the trauma we experience. We are people worthy of love and respect. Hope this film leaves you with some warmth. Link to the film is in my bio.
